The Ringling Museum of Art

Asian Art Study Center

cinematic documentation

The Asian Art Study Center is a wholly unique building affording a monumental entrance to the Ringling’s 60-acre campus nestled in Sarasota.

We propose to capture this building’s unique material construction, harmonious interaction with its context, and luminous interior spaces through the creation of a short architectural film which will share the magnificent interplay of this building’s space and users. The film will showcase visually the unique opportunities this new building affords Ringling's campus.

our philosophy

portraying life in buildings

Our films showcase buildings as they were designed to be used and experienced, and the unique and special opportunities those structures afford.

Bringing forward the relationships and interactions of people and places.

architecture and movement

We reveal form through movement, and function through observation. Architectural filmmaking is an entirely new and unique form of expression for the built environment. Our cameras drift, float and fly across buildings to capture their structure, materials, details, and context.

our techniques

We are pioneering and breaking new ground in fusing techniques and philosophies.

We shoot in cinema-quality, state-of-the-art, future-proof media formats to create permanent visual records that last the life of a building and beyond. We use an armature of specially-designed techniques, including calibrated color science and tuned digital negatives, to render impressions of light, temperature, dimension, and transitions in built structures.  Our cuts reveal the poetics of places in time.

The Ringling

shadow studies & lighting passes

We have conducted a number of studies of the Asian Art Center, to determine opportunities and options for capturing, in particular, the unique material construction of the facade of the building. We have analyzed the facade in a number of lighting conditions & times of day.

test shots

We visited the Ringling Campus and shot a number on informal test shots to test a number of techniques. The unique facade affords a tremendous opportunity to reveal the interplay of light and revelation of form.
